An exhibition by the famous sculptor Kiran Dixit Thacker, considered as the lone living female student of India’s great sculptor Ramkinkar Baij, was launched on October 4 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata.
Renowned for her unique way of sculpting, the sculptures of Thacker have been known to be distinguished by a strong sense of touch, form sensitivity, and involvement with rural and tribal life. She creates sculptures through which she reflects the cycles of nature and the bond between humans and nature.
This exhibition consists of works that depict Thacker’s long-standing interaction with individuals and their landscapes and communities outside of the urban environment in her art. The artist’s sculptural language, which is based on shape and materiality, provides an interesting depiction of rural life while carrying with it the impact of the artistic conventions prevalent in the tradition of her mentor Ramkinkar Baij.
The opening ceremony was graced by some distinguished personalities from the domains of art, academia and culture. These included famous sculptor, painter and academician Professor Pankaj Panwar; Professor Sitansu Mukhopadhyay of the Painting Department, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan; and Associate Professor Banatanwi Dasmahapatra of the Design and Textile Department, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan.
Sumi Sen Kundu, who is the Public Relation Officer of the Sarbabhartiya Sangeet-o-Sanskriti Parishad, was among those present on the occasion along with several other eminent personalities.
The exhibition celebrates Kiran Dixit Thacker’s remarkable achievements in Indian sculpting, allowing people to get a taste of art that has been influenced by form, nature, community, and life.
